Roadworks near Avontuur wine estate nearly complete

14 June 2017

A Department of Transport and Public Works project to replace damaged pipe culverts on the R44 near Avontuur wine estate in Stellenbosch is expected to have been completed at the end of June 2017. This R10 million project, which also involves the temporary widening of the road to facilitate traffic flow during construction, started in October 2015.

Events outside the Department’s control led to the works falling behind schedule and the termination of the original contract. A new contractor was appointed and is on schedule to complete the remaining works in time.

A temporary detour has been constructed on the Stellenbosch-bound side to permit two lanes of traffic to flow in each direction. For safety reasons, the speed limit through the detour is 40 km/h. Because this temporary road is very narrow, cyclists are urged to use an alternative route such as Winery Road.

The left lane on the Somerset West-bound side will need to be closed for a limited time to enable certain construction activities to be undertaken during off-peak hours. Winery Road may be used as an alternative route to avoid possible traffic congestion, and is a safer route for cyclists.

The Department thanks motorists and cyclists for their patience and urges them to exercise caution along the R44. We are aware that delays are frustrating. Motorists and cyclists will soon be able to enjoy a safer and more pleasant travelling experience on this road.
