Breërivier High School wins bronze in national road safety competition

8 October 2016

The 2016 Participatory Education Technique (PET) and Debate Competition of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) took place from 3 to 7 October at the Bolivia Lodge, Polokwane.

The Western Cape was represented by four teams, two teams each for the respective categories Urban PET and Debate and two teams for Rural PET and Debate respectively.

The schools that represented the province in the PET debate were Breërivier High School (Rural) or BH, and Steenberg High or SB in the Urban Category.

The problems identified by BH:

  • speeding,
  • lack of road signs,
  • lack of speed enforcement cameras,
  • lack of adequate pedestrian crossings,
  • jaywalking, and
  • socio economic problems, particularly crime that compound the unsafe traffic and road conditions on the R43, that runs from Villiersdorp to Worcester, behind BH.

The proposed solutions:

  • two traffic circles as traffic calming measures,
  • a raised pedestrian crossing,
  • a reduction in the speed limit from 60 km/h to 40 km/h,
  • pedestrian bridge,
  • boundary wall,
  • speed camera and
  • a close surveillance camera system.

The SB problems were confined to Orchestra and Symphony Roads.

The problems centred on speeding and reckless driving, and jaywalking. The proposed solutions were an embayment, more pedestrian crossings in both roads, and road signs.

BH came third in the category PET rural.
