Transport and Public Works knowledge management study wins international award

20 September 2016

A case study about the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) Knowledge Management (KM) Strategy won the Knowledge Management and Intellectual Capital Excellence Award at the 17th European Conference on Knowledge Management held earlier this month in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The study was written by Dr Andrew Kok of DTPW and Jan-Carel de Ridder, a consultant from DMRC.

Competition was stiff. In the first round, there were 40 entrants from 17 countries. Twenty were invited to present their case studies to a panel of experts. The best eight made it to the third round, and the last three presented their case studies to the conference plenary.
DTPW has previously been recognised as one of South Africa’s top six national and provincial departments in respect of performance management. Since the development of its KM strategy began in 2014, the Department has steadily improved its ability to leverage its tacit and explicit knowledge as an enabler of continuous learning, organisational effectiveness, and excellent performance.

Kok said he believes the team’s inclusive approach to solution design was the clincher.

“We expect that this award will support the further development of an organisational culture that values knowledge management. Our future success will be driven by a united vision and close teamwork,” he said.

“It is a privilege to work with such a dynamic team of people,” said De Ridder.

“The Department has taken great strides towards embedding continuous organisational learning through effective collaboration with all stakeholders. This international acknowledgement is well deserved.”

Head of Department Jacqueline Gooch says DTPW is committed to identifying creative and innovative applications of KM and showcasing best practices in the workplace. “KM is an important part of our work, and we’re delighted to receive international recognition. Our winning case study will be published in a handbook of best practice where the whole world can see it,” she said.
