Update on roadworks on the R101 and R304

2 August 2016

The Department of Transport and Public Works is making good progress with the rehabilitation of the R101 and R304 between Old Paarl Road and Bloekombos. This R59 million project commenced in April 2015 and is scheduled for completion early in 2017. Over 2 300 vehicles travel every day on these two roads.

A 4.29 km section of the R101 is being rehabilitated. Work on the R304 comprises:

  • the construction of new concrete side drains,
  • the reconstruction of a pedestrian sidewalk,
  • the reconstruction of property entrances,
  • the installation of new concrete kerbs and channels,
  • new pipe and portal culverts, and
  • the construction of a passing lane.

Thus far, 50% of all the planned road rehabilitation works have been completed. Electrical fence lines have been relocated, and the installation of underground services and storm water structures is complete.

Half-width construction is taking place. In other words, one lane is closed. There are stop/go operations to manage traffic along affected sections during the day, and a traffic light system at night.

Recent contract expenditure shows that approximately R4.5 million has been spent on targeted enterprises. Close to 10 000 person-days of work have been created so far for people residing in the De Novo and Bloekombos areas. A total of 19 000 person-days of work will be created for people from De Novo and Bloekombos by the time the project is complete. A total of 13 of the contract value is expected to go towards targeted enterprises in the Western Cape.

The Department is aware that roadworks frustrate motorists, but takes all possible steps to minimise inconvenience. Once the project is completed, residents and visitors will greatly benefit from improved conditions on these roads.
