Memorial service for Metrorail train driver Mr Piet Botha

14 July 2016

Statement by Donald Grant, Minister of Transport and Public Works

Today (14 July 2016), I attended a memorial service for Metrorail train driver Mr Piet Botha, who was shot and killed in a robbery at the Netreg train station near Bonteheuwel earlier this week. The memorial service was attended by the Botha family and friends, Metrorail colleagues and others.

On behalf of the Western Cape Government, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Botha family, friends and colleagues. We welcome the arrest of two men believed to be responsible for this crime.

I have been in contact with Metrorail Western Cape Regional Manager Richard Walker regarding rail safety awareness initiatives in targeted areas. This is still in planning stage, and would involve Metrorail, the Department of Transport and Public Works, the Department of Community Safety, City of Cape Town, and members of the public.

We would like to assure rail commuters and drivers that we are serious about their safety, and that we are here to work towards a safe and reliable public transport system in the Western Cape. Criminal acts will not deter us from this commitment.
