Minister Grant to visit wounded Provincial Traffic Services officers

13 July 2016

On 14 July 2016, Donald Grant, Minister of Transport and Public Works and Provincial Traffic Services officials will visit the two female traffic officers who sustained injuries in a drive-by shooting in Harare, Khayelitsha, last week.

It is believed that while Princess Nkomo and Mandisa Plaatjie were patrolling the area, two men travelling in a Toyota Avanza started shooting at them. Plaatjie was shot in the arm and Nkomo in the stomach. The officers suffered severe trauma and were admitted to the nearest hospital for surgery.

Plaatjie was discharged from hospital on 8 July, and Nkomo on 13 July. Nkomo said she could not wait to see her five-month old baby again. The officers, who are based at the Athlone regional office, are expected to return to work after a three-month recovery period.

During this time, the Department of Transport and Public Works has been providing all the necessary support to both officers, including covering the medical costs and regularly visiting the affected families. Because Minister Grant was away on business, Head of Department Jacqueline Gooch and other senior officials visited the two officers in hospital. Minister Grant returned to Cape Town late last night and will be visiting the officers at the earliest opportunity.

The suspects are still at large. Members of the public are urged to come forward with any information that may assist the police to investigate the crime and arrest the perpetrators.

There will be opportunities for interviews and photographs. (Please indicate your intention to attend)
