Outcome of meeting with WC metered taxi council

20 June 2016

Statement by Donald Grant, Minister of Transport and Public Works

Today (20 June 2016), senior officials and I met with representatives of the Western Cape metered taxi council. The meeting was convened to discuss the concerns of metered taxi operators and drivers.

I have agreed to look into these concerns, including reports of increasing numbers of illegal metred taxi operations throughout the province, in particular in Cape Town.

I’ve given the council an undertaking to engage with the City of Cape Town and also the national Department of Transport to try to find solutions for the issues that were tabled.

We remain committed to ensuring that the provision of public transport is safe and reliable for the commuters of this province, and we will continue to work closely with all public transport stakeholders in this spirit.

We are further committed to resolving issues that are within our powers to address, and will make available the necessary resources to do so.
