New Primary School in Mfuleni Is For the Future

As its name suggests, the new Nali’kamva (“here is the future”) Primary School represents better prospects for children residing in Mfuleni. After many delays, the school will open its doors in the 2016 academic year.

This R47 million project was commissioned by the Department of Transport and Public Works for the Western Cape Education Department. The school will accommodate 1 250 learners who have been using temporary classrooms on the site.

The construction of the administration building with all its ancillary classrooms and the Grade R facility began in July 2014 and reached practical completion in November 2015.

Teaching Facilities

• Two Grade R classrooms with playing areas and facilities.
• Sixteen foundation phase classrooms.
• Sixteen immediate phase classrooms.
• Eight senior phase classrooms.

There are also a two courtyards, a media room, arts and culture facility, and computer laboratory. Care has been taken to ensure that all classrooms have natural light and that they are adequately ventilated.

The intermediate and senior blocks each have two levels. The school hall and sports field are still under construction and handover of these facilities is expected in July 2016.

Project chairperson Chris Mntuyedwa says learners and teaching staff are excited to move into the new double-storey building in January.

“Despite community unrest and delays in recent years, the community can now take pride in this wonderful building. This school is for our children,” he said.
