Resealing Works on the R44 and R301 near Wellington

The Department of Transport and Public Works has started to reseal 6 km of the R301 (between the R44 and Mbekweni), 4 km of Sonstraal Road, 3 km of Swawelstert Road, and 8 km of Hermon-Bo Road in the Drakenstein Municipality.

This road infrastructure project, valued at R107 million, is scheduled for completion late in 2016. Up to 17 000 vehicles travel on these roads daily.

Work will include repairs to pavement layers and edge breaks, the construction of double seals, and maintenance work on all bridge structures on the affected roads.

General Traffic Management

There will be half-width construction with stop/ go operations during the day and a traffic light system at night.

Possible Delays

Motorists can expect weather-related delays.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The Department is committed to providing Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) work opportunities and to developing emerging contractor businesses. A total of 29 000 person-days of work will be created for local labour in the Drakenstein Municipality.

A total of 9% of the contract value is expected to be spent on targeted contractor businesses in the Western Cape.
