Over the next 16 months, the Department of Transport and Public Works will reseal 49 km on the R316 and R317 between Bredasdorp and Stormsvlei in the Overberg District municipality.
This road infrastructure project, valued at R73 million, is scheduled for completion in early 2017. Currently up to 447 vehicles travel daily on these roads daily.
Work will include the surface patching, base repairs and edge break repairs to the existing roads. There will be maintenance of the Kars River and Sout River bridges while a number of storm-water structures will be demolished and replaced with standard concrete inlet and outlet structures.
There will be half-width construction with 4 km stop/ go operating sections during the day with traffic light systems operating at night.
Motorists can expect weather-related delays.
The Department is committed to providing opportunities through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) and developing emerging contractor businesses. A total of 12 000 person-days of work will be created for local labour in the Overberg District municipality. A total of 12% of the contract value is expected to be spent on targeted contractor businesses in the Western Cape.
