Road Safety Education in Zwelethemba

4 October 2015

Ukhuseleko ezindleleni luxanduva lomtu wonke (Road safety is everyone’s responsibility).

With this message, the Department of Transport and Public Works encouraged road users to adopt safe road safety habits during an education and awareness event at the Zwelethemba taxi rank in Worcester on 3 October 2015.

Various law enforcement agencies participated in the event. On the day, road safety officers spoke to taxi drivers, passengers and pedestrians and handed out pamphlets. Participating drivers were keen to show officers their drivers’ licences and other important documentation.

Members of the public were shown how to use disposable alcohol breath-testing and drug testing equipment.

Children were given reflective wristbands in support of the Department’s #SaveKidsLives road safety theme for October Transport Month.

Many road users described the Department’s efforts to increase road safety education as “helpful”.

Taxi driver Rethabile Moshesu said: “I appreciate this road safety education. The reflective wristband I got will be useful when, for instance, my vehicle breaks down at night. I will take the demonstrations to heart.”

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said the Department will continue to create as much road safety awareness as possible to improve road user behaviour.

“Our aim is to reduce the number of road safety fatalities, but we cannot do that on our own. All road users carry a responsibility for road safety, and good driving and pedestrian habits are essential,” he said.

During October, the Department will also be working to improve awareness about drinking and driving, learner transport safety, child pedestrian safety, and seatbelt use.

It appeals to all road users to follow the rules, and to set an example of responsible behaviour at all times.

Similar driver and pedestrian road safety awareness campaigns are scheduled to be held between 08:00 and 12:00 at taxi ranks in Cape Town (14 October), Bellville (16 October) and Paarl (date to be confirmed).
