Violent Attack on Intercape Bus Completely Unacceptable

16 September 2015

Joint Statement by Dan Plato, Minister of Community Safety and Donald Grant, Minister of Transport and Public Works

Last night (15 September 2015), we received distressing news of a petrol bomb attack on an Intercape bus in Strand in which two people died and 34 were injured.

The bus was completely gutted. At this stage, the motive is unknown.

The Western Cape Government condemns all acts of violence in the strongest possible terms. The perpetrators of this violent crime must face the full might of the law.

We will support all efforts to bring these criminals to book.

Such acts undermine the provision of reliable public transport and threaten the safety of commuters. We send our condolences to the family and friends of those who lost their lives in the attack, and we wish the injured a speedy recovery.

We trust that the police will continue to conduct a thorough investigation into what happened. We urge eyewitnesses and anyone else who may be able to assist the police to come forward.

Anyone with information that could lead to these criminals being arrested should contact their nearest police station as soon as possible.
