Four Killed on Western Cape Roads This Weekend

Four people died on Western Cape roads this weekend. Three of them were pedestrians.

One pedestrian (female) died in Nyanga in the Cape Town Metropolitan area, and two (males) in the Overberg region. The fourth pedestrian, a male was killed on the N1 near Marine Drive in the Cape Town area.

This weekend’s (19 and 20 June 2015) 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 654 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.

A total of 1 360 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 20 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Mossel Bay at 1.68 mg/1 000 ml, which was seven times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 5 173 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 644 speeding offences were recorded.  Two hundred and twenty three (223) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 249 650.

Highest Speeds Recorded

  • 169 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 138 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Worcester service area.
  • 107 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N7 in the Knysna service area.

Four Fatalities Reported

Greater Cape Metropole:

  • Nyanga – 1 Pedestrian (female)

Overberg:

  • Albertinia – 1 Pedestrian (male)
  • Swellendam – 1 Pedestrian (male)

Metropole:

  • N1 Marine drive direction Paarl - 1 Driver (Male)
