Ministers to Conduct Oversight Visit to Community Day Centre Construction Site

15 May 2015

Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Minister of Health and Mr Donald Grant, Minister of Transport and Public Works will conduct an oversight visit on 18 May 2015 to the site where the Nomzamo Community Day Centre (CDC) is being built.

The construction of this facility is a direct response to the massive pressures that have gripped Helderberg Hospital which was never equipped to deal with the large numbers it deals with daily due to the influx of patients into our health facilities in the province.

Because most of the Department of Health facilities are constructed and maintained by the Department of Transport and Public Works until they have opened their doors to the public, Minister Grant will be showing Minister Mbombo around the construction site and providing a progress update.

This R28 million facility will see over 5 200 patients a month from Asanda Village and surrounding areas. It will offer a wide range of services including the following units focusing largely on the provision of Primary Health Care (PHC) services:

  • Women’s Health and Well Baby Unit: providing family planning, antenatal care, baby and child health.
  • Chronic Unit: the provision of chronic medication including health visits for ARVs.
  • Infectious Disease Wing: Additionally, patients can receive ARV (HIV) treatment, TB screening and treatment and will have an Infectious Diseases Unit, treating infectious cases conveniently located close to the entrance.
  • Pharmacy services: Issuing scripts (5 200 per month) including pre-packaged chronic medication collection point.

The construction of this CDC is one of the projects Dr Mbombo undertook to complete during her budget speech several weeks ago and forms part of her vision to strengthen the Primary Healthcare System in the Western Cape.
