Twenty-five Arrested for Drinking and Driving

From 24 until 27 April 2015, 25 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 589 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign. Seventeen (17) road traffic fatalities were reported on the province’s roads.

A total of 1 755 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 25 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Knysna at 1.47 mg/1 000 ml, which was six times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 49 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 49 speeding offences were recorded.  A total of 258 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 305 200.

Highest Speeds

  • 174 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Mossel Bay service area.
  • 147 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N2 in the Caledon service area.

Four Other Arrests

  • One for reckless and negligent driving arrest in Brackenfell.
  • One for false documentation arrest in Brackenfell.
  • One for fraudulent documentation in Oudtshoorn.
  • One for impoundment in Oudtshoorn.
