Between 2 and 5 April 2015, 21 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 380 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign. Twenty-three people, including 12 pedestrians, died on the province’s roads during the past Easter weekend.
A total of 1 858 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 53 arrests.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in George at 1.79 mg/1 000 ml, which was seven times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.
A total of 539 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 235 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 254 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R335 650.
