Transport and Public Works Offers Learner’s Licence Training to Interns

21 November 2014

Department of Transport Public Works offered free learner’s licence training to the Premier’s Advancement of Youth (PAY) interns in Cape Town from 17 to 20 November 2014. The course forms part of the department’s road safety management initiative for high school learners, PAY interns and unemployed youth.

The training is based on the comprehensive K53 defensive driving system, which covers the rules of the road, road signs and markings and vehicle controls.

In addition to the standard K53 requirements, the department has added a number of road safety education elements. Important road safety messages were emphasised throughout the course.

These included:

  • The importance of pedestrian and cycling safety.
  • Not using cell phones while driving.
  • The key features of being a good driver.

The aim is for these young people to get their learner’s licences and to become conscious and responsible drivers.

Daneline du Preez (20) and Yolisa Sambu (21) from the department’s Land Transport Contracts component are extremely grateful for this opportunity. Ms Du Preez plans to pursue a career in the police next year, and having a driving licence is an important requirement.

“I’m glad to be receiving free lessons. This will make it easier to get my licence,” she said.

Mr Sambu also shared his delight, by saying: “I’ve always wanted to get my learner’s licence, but I never knew where to start. This opportunity potentially opened doors for me,” he said.

Both plan to make appointments to write their learner's licence tests before the end of the year.

By providing this free learner’s licence training, the department is empowering young people and improving road safety in the Western Cape.
