Thirty Eight Arrested for Drinking and Driving this Weekend

On 10 and 11 October, 25 alcohol blitz roadblocks were held across the Western Cape with a total of 2 833 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.

A total of 1 472 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 38 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Laingsburg at 1.19 mg/1 000 ml, which was four times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

Six thousand five hundred and eighty two (6 582) vehicles were screened for speeding of which 493 speeding offences were recorded. 

A total of 281 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 313 700.

Highest Speeds Recorded

  • 181 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 92 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on the N1 in the Knysna service area.
  • 102 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N2 in the Oudtshoorn area.

Five Other Arrests

  • 1 x  Reckless and or negligent arrest (Somerset West)
  • 1 x Dagga Arrest (Swellendam)
  • 1 x Drug arrest KAT (Brackenfell)
  • 2 x False documentation arrest (Swellendam and Laingsburg)

Six Fatalities Reported

Greater Cape Metropole:

  • Brackenfell – 1 x Pedestrian
  • Guguletu – 1 x Driver

Eden/Central Karoo:

  • Plettenberg bay – 1 x  Driver

Winelands/Overberg:

  • Koue Bokke veld – 1 x passenger
  • Caledon – 1 x Driver

West Coast

  • Vredenburg – 1 x Passenger
