Twenty People Killed on Western Cape Roads This Weekend

On 29 and 30 August 2014, 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 3 059 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.

One thousand four hundred and forty two (1 442) drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 27 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Oudtshoorn at 1.16 mg/1 000 ml, which was 4 times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 5 548 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 720 speeding offences were recorded.

Two hundred and sixty nine (269) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R355 300.

The highest speed that was recorded:

  • 186 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Beaufort West service area.
  • 124 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N2 in the Swellendam service area.

Other Arrest: One

  • 1 x Counterfeiting and altering a licence disc (Knysna)

Eden/Central Karoo:

  • Beaufort West – 1 x Pedestrian
  • Hornlee/Knysna – 1 x Pedestrian

Winelands/Overberg:

  • Botrivier – 1 x Cyclist
  • Barrydale – 1 x Pedestrian
  • Prince Alfred’s Hamlet – 1 x Pedestrian
  • Paarl – 2 x Pedestrians

West Coast:

  • Clanwilliam – 1 x Motor cyclist
  • Moorreesburg – 1 x Pedestrian
  • Vredenburg – 1 x Driver
