Four National Traffic Police Members Arrested

9 July 2014

Ms Dipuo Peters, the National Minister of Transport has received with shock reports of the arrest of four traffic officials attached to the Road Traffic Management Corporation's (RTMC) National Traffic Police.

Preliminary reports indicate that the four were arrested by police on 9 July 2014 for crimes committed while on duty.

The Minister says the law must be allowed to take its course.

She has however called on the board and management of the RTMC to rid the entity of rotten apples.

"We need men and women of integrity to carry out the task of saving people's lives on our roads. There's no room for criminal elements in the service. Criminals should not be allowed to masquerade as servants of the people in our uniform."

Minister Peters has urged the board to conduct a thorough audit of the calibre of officers attached to the National Traffic Police.

The Department of Transport will await more information before commenting further on the matter.
