Provincial Traffic Services Weekend Traffic Operations

On 20 and 21 June 2014, 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 067 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic services safety campaign.

  • 968 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 18 arrests.
  • The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Knysna at 1.09 mg/1000 ml, which was four times the legal limit of 0,24 mg/1000 ml.
  • 12 122 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 1 389 speeding offences were recorded.
  • 228 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R135 800.00.

The highest speed that was recorded:

  • 175 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 154 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Worcester service area.
  • 107 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N2 in the Somerset West service area.

Other Arrest: Four

  • 2 x False Documentation Arrest (Brackenfell).
  • 1 x Dagga  Arrest (Vredenburg).
  • 1 x Dagga Arrest (Vredendal).

This weekend four fatalities were reported:

  • 1 x Pedestrian was knocked down by light motor vehicle (Klapmuts).
  • 1 x Driver lost control of a light motor vehicle and overturns (Swellendam).
  • 1 x Motorcycle collided with light motor vehicle (Malmesbury).
  • 1 x Motorcycle collided with light motor vehicle (Tableview).
