Another Pedestrian Killed by MEC's Blue Light Brigade

25 April 2014

Statement by Robin Carlisle, Minister of Transport and Public Works

An elderly woman, Mrs Nomvume Dabula (77), was knocked down and killed by a high speed blue light brigade rushing to fetch clothes for Zoleka Capa, Eastern Cape MEC for Rural Development.

The MEC denies she was in her official Audi Quattro 7 at the time, but police and traffic officers at the scene dispute this.

The injuries leading to the death of Mrs Dabula were consistent with her being struck with great force and at high speed, despite the crash having occurred in the main street of downtown Mount Frere where the speed limit was 60 km/h.

MEC Capa has yet to make contact with the family of the deceased.

"This tragic killing highlights the need to extend the ban on blue light brigades from the Western Cape to all other provinces".

"I also urge other provinces to strip blue lights and sirens from MECs official vehicles, as we have done in this province. MECs, other than Premiers, should also not be allowed support cars or convoys unless there exists a clear threat of physical injury," said Robin Carlisle, Minister of Transport and Public Works.
