Chapman’s Peak Drive to Re-open for Traffic

10 December 2013

The Chapman’s Peak Drive will be re-opened on Tuesday 10 December 2013.

The closure came after heavy torrential rainfalls during the night of 15 or 16 November this year. The heavy rains caused severe rock and mudslides on the 600 metre-long approach section of the drive past Chapman’s Peak No 1, from the Hout Bay side the drive.

This section was extensively destabilised and posed an unacceptably high hazard.

Currently the traffic flow will be managed via a single lane. A stop-go traffic management system will currently be in place. This arrangement will stay in place until the remaining debris on the road has been cleared, temporary maintenance works are completed, all the damage to the road has been repaired and additional landslide protection works have been installed.

During this period passage through the drive for both vehicles and pedestrians will be determined by weather conditions and construction activities.
