On Wednesday, 21 September 2022, the Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais capped 98 players from the Western Cape who will be competing at the National Indigenous Games, which will take place in Kwa-Zulu Natal from 24 September 2022.
The players being capped were chosen after the conclusion of the district games, which took place across the province in May 2022. They will be competing in the team codes of Dibeke, Jukskei, Kgati and Kho-Kho and individual codes of Diketo, Drie Stokkies, IIntonga, Morabaraba and Ncuva.
A total of 151 people from the Western Cape will be travelling to the National Games, which includes 98 players, 11 coaches, 11 managers, 4 medical staff, 3 support staff, 3 management staff, 17 technical officials and 4 National Code Structure representatives.
Minister Marais told the participants: “I am very proud of each one of you who made the decision to participate in sport. I know that you face challenges every day and there is a lot of pressure to get involved in activities outside of school that your friends are doing. You have each made a positive decision to participate in sport and to use your time after school to develop your talents. You are all role-models to your friends and other youth in your community and I thank you for that.”
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has supported these athletes as they develop their skills in the games that they love. The participation of youth in indigenous games is an important tool in keeping them safe after formal school hours.
