West Coast sport federations receive support to continue their activities

14 April 2021

On Tuesday, 13 April 2021, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport hosted the second of six ceremonial cheque handovers, where funding is handed over to sporting federations across the province.

Tuesday’s ceremony saw Minister Anroux Marais handing over a total of R843 491 to the West Coast District Sport Council in Saldanha. This funding will enable the 12 affiliated sport federations to fulfill their mandate of developing and promoting their respective codes and clubs in the region.

As part of the build-up to the 2023 Netball World Cup, the Saldanha Municipality also received an additional amount of R600 000 at the ceremony to upgrade the netball facilities at the Ronnie Louw sport field in Hopefield.

During the keynote address, Minister Marais said, “Following the DCAS budget allocations for the 2021/22 financial year, it gives me great pleasure and joy to present R843 491 to the 12 West Coast sporting federations in Saldanha Bay this evening. As we now safely move forward in the Western Cape, this allocation will undoubtedly promote the very important sporting activities in the district through the provision of administration, development, capacity building support and ad-hoc funding as well as major events to increase the talent at grassroots level while uplifting the communities we serve”.

A total of approximately R12.9 million will be handed over to 145 affiliated sport federations across the province during this process. The next handover will take place in the Metro region on 14 April 2021.
