9 March 2021

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport invited women to participate in a hybrid event, in which various topics facing women in the sporting industry were discussed.

The event was held on 8 March 2021, at the Fountains Hotel in Cape Town and was held in celebration of International Women’s Day 2021.

Dr Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director of Sport and Recreation at DCAS, welcomed all attendees and opened the discussion by highlighting the importance of the various discussion that took place. “What I look forward to hearing, is the issues that women and women leaders have in sport today. It is very important that we understand the challenges you face, and we as a department are here to support all women in sport” said Dr Bouah.

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, delivered the keynote address and highlighted how the department supports sport promotion both financially and through various projects.

“As we are aggressively serious about the struggle for gender equality and the plight of women, at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) we have been firm in our support of marginalized groups, prioritizing women and girls and persons with disabilities… I am proud to announce and express my gratitude to the Sport Promotion Directorate who manages our Women’s desk specifically assigned to deliver on the mandate for women in sport,” said Minister Marais.

"For the 2020-2021 financial year a total of just over R5.7 million was allocated to sport federations across the Western Cape. Collectively a total of approximately R 1. 4 million was transferred to the codes of Netball, Softball, Gymnastics, Golf, Women’s Rugby, Ladies Football, Drum Majorettes and Cheerleading and Dance sport specifically for women and girls."
