Western Cape Choirs Illuminate the Stage at Artscape

6 September 2016

Various choirs from in and around the Western Cape enchanted a jam-packed Artscape Theatre on Sunday, 4 September for the Western Cape Choral Music Association (WeCCMA) 2016 Choral Music Eisteddfod.

The event, co-hosted by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), WeCCMA and the Artscape Theatre, consisted of Developing, Senior and Premier Sections, with competing choirs each performing two pieces as prescribed, one African composition and one classical.

The judges gave each choir some very constructive criticism as to how they could improve in future competitions. It was difficult deciding which performances deserved to take the prizes, but ultimately the winners were as follows:

In the Developing section, first place went to George Chorale, second was the Ntirisano Arts Academy and Phillipi Sweet Melodies came third;
In the Senior section, Voices of the Cape placed first, with Phenomenal Opera Voices and Western Classical Voices second and third respectively; and
In the Premier section, Western Chorale were thrilled to take first place, followed by Simon Estes Alumni, with United Choral Artists in third place.

Speaking on behalf of WeCCMA, Zintle Kolo thanked everyone present and wished them an enjoyable day. “This festival is a highlight in every chorister’s calendar. It is aligned with our organisation’s aim, which is to ensure that the development of our choirs and choristers is of such a standard that they are able to compete at an international level”, she said. “The fact that you took time off from all other obligations to be here, shows how significant and important this event is.”

The event celebrated the power of music, team work and how music has the ability to nourish the soul. Through events such as these, DCAS offers the opportunity to grow the next generation of music stars, BETTER TOGETHER.
