Promoting and Developing Drama in the Cape Winelands

13 June 2013

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) will host the Cape Winelands Drama Festival with a scriptwriting workshop at the Okkie Jooste Cultural Facility in Stellenbosch from 14 – 16 June 2013.

The festival follows after the Eden and West Coast Drama Festival were successfully presented by DCAS and stakeholders. Drama groups will compete for an opportunity to perform at the coming Suidoosterfees (Artscape) and Zabalaza festival (Baxter Theatre).

The Cape Winelands Drama festival focuses on development. Emerging artists from this district will receive training from scriptwriting to drama development.

Mr Moeniel Jacobs of DCAS Arts and Culture says the aim of the festival is not only to expose the youth to a professional arena, but also to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to produce professional theatre in rural communities.

This weekend is the first phase of the festival framework, which is the development phase. Scriptwriting development will be presented to the scriptwriters of about 15 drama groups from communities in Langeberg, Stellenbosch, Worcester and Drakenstein.

The workshop will be facilitated by Stellenbosch-based drama lecturers Abduragman Adams and Johan Esterhuizen, while New Africa Theatre Association’s Mbu Grootboom and Mandisi Sindo of the Zabalaza festival will also share their knowledge with participants.

The festival is just another example of the commitment by DCAS and its stakeholders to promote and develop local drama in rural communities in the Western Cape.
