Museums get financial boost for 2019

5 April 2019

Museums from across the Cape Winelands region received a welcome financial boost from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport on Thursday, 4 April 2019.  The cheque handover took place at the Van Der Stel Sport Hall in Stellenbosch.

A total of R3 034 724 was handed over to managers of the region’s various museums, including Huguenot Museum, Montagu Museum, Oude Kerk Volksmuseum, Paarl Museum, Stellenbosch Museum, Togryers Museum, Wellington Museum and Robertson Museum.

Michael Janse van Rensburg, Deputy Director for museums at DCAS, thanked all the museum managers from the region for their dedication to museums and their communities.

"Museums depend on these funds to deliver on their mandate and to keep the museum doors open to the public. Province-aided and local museums manage, preserve, research, educate and promote the collections in their care," he said.

Minister Anroux Marais praised the work that museums do in our province, and encouraged all citizens to visit their local museum and learn about the heritage and history of the Western Cape. She also emphasised the importance of knowing your history.

"It is for this very reason that the department provides affiliated, province-aided and local museums with annual subsidies and grant-in-aid payments. This funding is part of our ongoing efforts to promote, transform and highlight the crucial role which heritage and museums play in our communities," said Minister Marais.

The next handover will take place at the Glaskasteel Complex in Bredasdorp on 9 April 2019.

DCAS encourages communities and tourists to learn more about the local history at museums in the Western Cape. Let us promote and share the valuable items and activities at our museums, BETTER TOGETHER.
