DCAS Adds Value to Lives of Vulnerable Youth

The Togryers Museum, in partnership with the Witzenberg Association for People with Disability, hosted a craft development training workshop from 17 to 19 June 2015 at the Museum in Ceres.

15 youth were taught how to do beadwork, decorative bottles and greeting cards.  It was a demonstration of perseverance that developed into pure cheerfulness when the youth with disabilities were able to manage the new skills.   Disability means many things to many people and this initiative proved that capability is also a matter of the heart and mind.

The new partnership with the Association defines a shared vision to enhance the self-worth and confidence of vulnerable people with the potential to assist with sustainable income on the long run. It inspired the group with a sense of belonging and will hopefully contribute to a more positive view on the investment in people with disabilities.

Museum Manager Bertdene Laubscher believes that our duty is to proceed as if limits do not exist.  She says that the new skills will make a big difference in the life of these young people.  “It is very rewarding to see the big smiles on their faces and the pride in their eyes after the completion of the artwork”, says Laubscher.
