Touching the Hearts of HIV/Aids Orphans

The Simon’s Town Museum’s campaign for disadvantaged children, the annual knit-a-jersey and donate-a-soft toy campaign, starts this month and ends in November. The museum appeals to members of the public to assist and contribute in whichever way possible. 

In December the items will be donated to orphans living with HIV/Aids. The museum manager, Ms Cathy Salter-Jansen, described the initiative, started in 2007, as worthy of support. “The items bring warmth and joy to these children. Each jersey and each teddy is different, so that each child receives something that is special and unique for them,” she said.

The museum is committed to raising awareness regarding HIV/Aids. They often have a stand at the local shopping mall, where information regarding HIV/Aids can be obtained.

Salter-Jansen said that the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and community organisations support this initiative, but she hopes that the public can assist the museum to make a difference. She added that anyone is welcome to join and contribute to the initiative, as collection/drop-off points can be arranged.
