Storytelling and Reading in celebration of National Book Week

7 September 2015

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport’s Language Services unit hosted a storytelling and reading programme on Friday, 4 September 2015.  The event took place at the library in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch in celebration of National Book Week.

All the participants, from grades 3 – 7, came from two schools in Kayamandi : Ikhaya Primary and Khayamandi Primary. The learners read extracts from the books of renowned authors Sindiwe Magona and Sandile Gxilishe. During the storytelling session, some of the learners shared their  personal experiences to the delight of the audience.

Event organiser Beaulla Stofile from Language Services said that she plans on making this an annual event. “Events like these not only improve the learners’ reading abilities, but also boost their self-esteem and presentation skills”, she said.

DCAS supports the development of previously marginalised languages in the Western Cape through inculcating a culture of reading and storytelling.  Communities should support these initiatives and attend them. Let us create a well-read, knowledgeable province, BETTER TOGETHER.
