Special Economic Zones (SEZ’s)
The Freeport Saldanha and ASEZ, part of a national industrial policy, aim to reduce poverty and inequality, and increase inclusivity. These initiatives will unlock significant investment in key sectors. The Western Cape, along with the Northern Cape, focuses on green hydrogen investment, with the WCG committed to exploiting this economy for the province.

The Freeport Saldanha
The Saldanha Bay Industrial Development Zone (trading as Freeport Saldanha) was designated on 31 October 2013 and is operated by the Saldanha Bay IDZ Licencing Company (SOC). It is jointly funded and supported by the National Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) and the Western Cape Provincial Department of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism.

Atlantis Special Economic Zone
The ASEZ is a Greentech Special Economic Zone (SEZ) that promotes sustainable economic growth and job creation through green technology innovations. Greentech can be defined as technology whose use is intended to mitigate or reverse the effects of human activity on the environment. This definition includes, but is not limited to, technologies relating to renewable energy, energy storage, energy-efficiency, water efficiency and management, greener packaging, recycling, green chemicals etc. Resource-efficient producers employ processes, products and services to increase the resource-efficiency of production and to reduce pollution and minimise negative impacts on humans and the environment. It is developed in partnership with the City of Cape Town (CoCT) and the Department of Trade, Industry Competition (DTIC) within the national industrial development programme. They offer a unique business environment that supports companies in reducing their carbon footprint and contributing to a socially inclusive economy.
