Green Hydrogen

DEDAT is establishing a green hydrogen footprint in the province is a major opportunity and an important step towards decarbonisation and transitioning away from the use of fossil fuels. Green Hydrogen has become one of the great market opportunities, with Saldanha coming into the forefront of developments for the country and even the global environment. In addition to the Freeport offering, the presence of a steel plant and a bulk terminal provides the opportunity for serving two major hard-to-abate sectors with Green Hydrogen energy alternatives.

The economic opportunity for the Western Cape is embedded in South Africa’s Green Hydrogen Commercialisation Strategy, the Hydrogen Society Roadmap and in the value embedded in its entities and the region. The Western Cape Green Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap now also provides the direction and implementation steps to realise this opportunity.

Due to its endowments of natural resources (land, wind, solar and ocean energy), the Western Cape is strategically positioned to become a significant player in the international hydrogen market. Good existing infrastructure (notably the port and back-of-port bulk infrastructure) has contributed to the development of Saldanha as a Green Hydrogen Hub being confirmed as a national priority in the National Green Hydrogen Commercialisation Strategy.
