DEA&DP and Two Oceans Aquarium partner to bring a piece of the oceans to Eden school district.

27 July 2018

In the lead up to Marine Week, schools in the Eden district will form part of an outreach programme based on teaching the importance of our oceans and its species. The visits will take place from 23rd to 27th July 2018 at five schools in the build up to Marine Week taking place in October later this year.

The outreach programme is aimed at Grade R to Grade 7 learners with the core material being presented aligning with the CAPS curriculum.

Partnering with the Department, the Two Oceans Aquarium’s mobile aquarium which allows for transportation of live animals, will offer learners an informative, interactive and hands-on experience of ocean life.

The five schools being visited are:

  • De Waalville PS
  • Voorwaarts PS
  • Melkhoutfontein PS
  • Vondeling PS
  • Slangrivier PS

The marine animals which will be on display for the learners to see and touch include starfish, sea urchins and anemones. The lesson being presented includes an introduction to the rocky shore environment, how these animals are specifically adapted to their environment, food chains in the ocean, marine litter/pollution and the effects on marine life.
