The Western Cape Climate Change Projects Database captures climate change mitigation and adaptation projects that are being (or were) implemented in the Western Cape to date. As far as possible projects are only included in this database if there is a clear link to climate change response i.e. they either reduce greenhouse gas emissions or reduce risk related to specific climate related hazards. The database aims to share information and encourage the sharing of lessons learnt in order to promote effective implementation, collaboration and partnerships. It will also be used to track and measure climate change responses in the Western Cape as it relates the WCCCRS (2014) and identify gaps in sectors or districts across the province.

The database includes projects in twelve categories:

  • Biodiversity and Ecosystem Goods and Services
  • Coastal and Estuary Management
  • Disaster Risk Management
  • Energy
  • Food Security and Agriculture
  • Healthy Communities
  • Human Settlements
  • Spatial Planning
  • Transport
  • Waste Management
  • Water, and
  • Cross-cutting, for projects that cover more than one category.

The database includes both public sector and private sector projects, sourced from project managers, provincial databases and planning documents, municipal questionnaires, provincially co-ordinated forums and websites open to the general public. The projects range in size from small-scale to large-scale. While extensive efforts have been made to collect relevant project information, the database is not exhaustive. Project information has been checked via desktop research, but has not been verified by an independent third party.
