Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital: Occupational Therapy

Description:
Occupational therapists 'help clients across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of occupations' (The American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc, 2012).

Occupations are described as 'the ordinary and familiar things we do every day' (Christiansen and Baum, 1998). If you are unable to continue with activities or daily tasks, it's difficult for you to get the most from life.

OTs use meaningful activities to help clients with a range of problems to improve their functioning and quality of life. This empowers clients to be as independent as possible in their daily activities, and to experience dignity and quality of life at school, work, at home or during play.

Who do OTs work with?

OTs work with clients who, for various reasons, cannot do ordinary and familiar things in their daily life. Through client-centered treatment, OTs enable, enhance and empower clients to be able to do daily activities which are meaningful to them.

At Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital OTs work primarily with children, and their families. OT services are offered to in-patients and out- patients, with our focus primarily being on the assessment and treatment of in-patients.

Instructions:
The OTs treat out-patients with varying diagnosis. Out-patients that are seen at at the hospital is determined by the level of care required for their specific diagnosis.

Patients who have been discharged may receive a follow up date with an OT or the patient will be referred for ongoing intervention at a Metro District Health OT which is closest to the area in which they live.

Out-patients, who have not been admitted to a ward, have to be referred to OT by a medical service at the hospital.

No referrals will be accepted from private practioners, teachers or parents.
