MOD Sport Centres

(Western Cape Government)
MOD Sport Centres were first established in communities in April 2010. They were then moved to primary schools because it was believed that this would attract a larger number of participants. This decision proved to be the right one, the number of participants doubled, and centres in schools became community hubs, serving their own learners as well as participants from the broader community.

High school sport centres were established in June 2011. One high school Sport Centre was established for every two primary schools within a circuit in a district. Starting a new project in the middle of the school year was challenging and made it difficult for coaches and coordinators to make an impact at schools. Furthermore, youth at secondary school face a different set of problems to those in primary school. Substance abuse, crime and gangsterism is widespread in some places. Many high school learners did not play sport at primary school and are therefore not interested in sport, or not equipped to specialise in sport at secondary school level.
