Summary

There is a depth of history and information that can be found among the rows of volumes and old records at the Western Cape Archives. If you look closely you will discover all sorts of interesting pieces of history – the way that records were written, bound and used, the kind of evidence they hold and the reasons people created them. Behind a single photograph lies the photographer who took it and the world they lived in… behind a single stamp or label lies an artisan or an industry… and behind a single record entry lies a person’s life or a forgotten event, the work of an entire section of a government and an entire collection of archives.

 We hope that this series of posts will encourage the public to engage with the Archives with a renewed understanding of its complexity, context and rich histories:
