Department of Police Oversight and Community Safety: Head of Department
About
Advocate Yashina Pillay our Head of Department (HOD) and has extensive experience in various positions in government since 2009.
Yashina matriculated at Effingham Secondary School in Durban and obtained her law degree at Howard College at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Yashina’s first job was at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in Cape Town as an Information Analyst and later an Evidence Analyst. When she was younger, she said, she aspired to be a hotshot corporate lawyer, but the TRC changed her mind and inspired her to help others. When asked what she had learned from her first manager, she responded that Archbishop Desmond Tutu's vision, empathy, moral principles of justice and integrity that he upheld had served as her inspiration.
As HOD, Yashina says it’s about creating a better life for citizens of the Western Cape. When describing her leadership style, she said “I aspire to be a visionary, innovative, a servant and collaborative leader, leading by example, rendering support, coaching and delegating to empower others to lead.”
