Western Cape Government welcomes the re-enlistment of 62 detectives to the Western Cape

04 March 2026

Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde, and the provincial Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, have welcomed the re-enlistment of 62 experienced detectives into the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape.

“This boost to the investigative capacity of the SAPS is long overdue and must translate into successful prosecutions, especially in significantly weakening organised crime and gangsterism. I call on the Minister of Police and national SAPS management to back this move with the resources police officers and detectives in the Western Cape need to build strong, court-ready cases and for the Minister to urgently prioritise the expansion of investigative powers at local government level,” said Premier Winde.

The expertise and institutional knowledge these seasoned detectives bring will enhance the ability of the police to build watertight cases that stand up in court.

Successful prosecutions remain one of the most powerful deterrents to crime. When offenders are arrested, thoroughly investigated, and ultimately convicted, it sends a clear message to those contemplating criminal activity: crime will not go unpunished. If you choose lawlessness, we will find you and you will face the consequences of your actions.

Securing convictions is also essential to restoring and strengthening trust between communities and the police. Residents must have confidence that when crimes are reported, they are properly investigated and that justice will follow. A capable and effective detective service is central to achieving this goal.

Minister Marais said, “As a department, we are actively exploring ways to support SAPS in ensuring that our detectives have the necessary tools, resources and operational support to effectively do their work. We are in ongoing discussions with SAPS management in the province to determine how we can best assist in strengthening investigative capacity and improving outcomes.”
