PROVINCIAL SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE CONVENES TO DISCUSS KEY ISSUES
On Tuesday, 17 February 2026, Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, convened a meeting of the Western Cape Provincial Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC).
The PSAC is a statutory body established under the Western Cape Community Safety Act. It provides strategic advice, recommendations on policies, budgets, and legislation to the provincial Minister, with the aim of improving safety and crime prevention strategies.
Key deliberations during the meeting centred on the deployment of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to the Western Cape to support the South African Police Service (SAPS) in addressing high levels of violent crime, particularly gang-related murders. The committee provided strategic input on how such deployments can be optimally coordinated to disrupt and dismantle organised crime syndicates, while ensuring measurable impact and enhanced community safety.
Discussions further focused on strengthening the long-term sustainability and measurable outcomes of key provincial safety interventions, including the Chrysalis Academy. Members emphasised the importance of integrating skills development and employment pathways.
The committee also engaged on practical ways in which the Western Cape Government can support the SAPS in capacitating and resourcing its detective services. Strengthening investigative standards and enhancing case-building processes were highlighted as critical levers to increase successful prosecutions and reinforce public confidence in the criminal justice system.
Members provided guidance on advocating for and supporting law enforcement agencies, as well as the extended criminal justice system, in the consistent and effective implementation of the Child Justice Act.
Minister Marais said, “The Provincial Safety Advisory Committee is a highly valued strategic partner in shaping our safety agenda. The independent expertise and constructive insight provided by its members strengthen our resolve and refine our approach. By drawing on this collective experience, we are better positioned to implement focused, data-driven interventions that advance our shared goal of building a safer Western Cape for all.”
