Minister Marais welcomes Multi-Agency take-down of extortion ring
Western Cape Minister for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, has welcomed the successful multi-agency operation that resulted in the arrest of four suspects on Sunday 16 August 2026 allegedly linked to an extortion ring.
The operation was led by South African Police Service (SAPS) provincial serious violent crime detectives, with support from Crime Intelligence, the SAPS Drone Unit, the National Prosecuting Authority, City of Cape Town agencies and the Financial Intelligence Centre. The suspects include three family members from Nyanga, one of whom is a police constable, as well as a businessman who is alleged to have collected extortion payments on behalf of the group.
Minister Marais said,” The arrests send an important message that extortion will not be tolerated and that law enforcement agencies are increasingly working together to disrupt the networks behind these crimes.”
“I welcome this important take-down and commend SAPS and all the participating agencies for their work in bringing these suspects before the courts. Extortion is not simply a crime against an individual business owner. It undermines local economies, threatens livelihoods, creates fear in communities and provides fertile ground for organised criminal networks to expand.”
Minister Marais said the case also highlights the importance of following the money and strengthening cooperation between law enforcement, intelligence structures, the prosecuting authority and financial crime investigators.
Minister Marais also urged businesses and community members to report extortion attempts at the earliest possible stage.
“One of the greatest challenges in dealing with extortion is that victims are often afraid to report threats because they fear retaliation. But early reporting can save lives. We cannot wait until an extortion attempt escalates into an assault, a shooting or a murder before we act. Every threat must be taken seriously and reported so that law enforcement has an opportunity to intervene before lives are lost,” Minister Marais said.
Residents and business owners who experience or become aware of extortion-related crime are encouraged to report it to the SAPS Extortion Hotline on 0800 31 4444.
