Sport Legends

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) is proud to acknowledge and honour legends, heroes, and heroines who have made significant contributions to the development, transformation, and growth of sport and recreation in South Africa, particularly in the Western Cape.

The Sport Legends Ceremony was introduced in 2005 and was hosted annually until 2022. Previous Sport Legends honoured through the ceremony include: 

2025, 2022, 2021, 2018,  2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005.

Nominations for the Sport Legends Ceremony 2026 are open. 

Online nomination forms are available in English, Afrikaans or Xhosa.

Nominations close on 31 August 2026. 
 

Invitations to submit nominations have been circulated to local sport federations, district sport councils, school sport structures, and district sport offices.

All nominations will be reviewed by an Independent Adjudication Panel composed of suitably qualified individuals with expertise and experience in sport administration, sports history, athlete development, and community sport. This will ensure a fair, credible, and informed selection process.
