WCG Proud to Partner with Sanlam Cape Town Marathon for a Healthier, More Active Province

The Western Cape Government (WCG) is proud to once again be a partner in the 2025 Cape Town Marathon - Africa’s only Abbott World Marathon Majors candidate event. This global sporting showcase reflects the province’s shared commitment to promoting active, healthy lifestyles and ensuring that every resident has the opportunity to participate meaningfully in sport.

Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Ricardo Mackenzie said the WCG’s partnership goes beyond supporting the annual race; it is about inspiring a culture of movement, mutual care while also creating job opportunities along the entire value chain.

“The Cape Town Marathon brings together communities, visitors, and athletes from all walks of life,” said Minister Mackenzie. “We are proud to stand alongside the organisers and partners of this world-class event, because we know that sport changes lives. It keeps us healthy, builds unity, and strengthens our shared sense of purpose.”

In 2025, the event will carry added personal significance for Minister Mackenzie, who will be taking part in the marathon for the first time. “I am looking forward to experiencing this iconic race as a participant. I hope my journey will inspire others to start training early, set goals, and get active,” he added.

The WCG also used the occasion to highlight road safety and the need for all road users to look out for one another — particularly as training season begins. “We call on every driver, runner, and cyclist to share the road responsibly. Let’s keep safety at the heart of our fitness journeys and ensure that everyone gets home safely,” said MEC Mackenzie.

The provincial government encourages residents to begin preparing now to take part in next year’s marathon, whether in the main race, 10 km, or 5 km fun run. Residents are also encouraged to join local running clubs, take part in community park runs and races, and enjoy daily walks across our beautiful province. “Staying active not only improves mental health and wellbeing but also enhances productivity and contributes to a stronger provincial economy. Every stride we take together builds a healthier, safer, and more connected Western Cape,” concluded Mackenzie.
