Minister Ricardo Mackenzie Welcomes R15 Million Allocation for World Cup Legacy Infrastructure upgrades for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027
Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, has welcomed the announcement that the Western Cape Government has allocated R15 million towards preparations for the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.
The allocation was announced today by Western Cape Finance Minister Deidré Baartman during her Provincial Budget Speech, highlighting the province’s commitment to supporting major international sporting events.
The allocated funds will be shared between Cricket Boland and Western Province Cricket Association for the upgrading and construction of infrastructure that will be used for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in October and November 2027.
Minister Mackenzie said the investment demonstrates the Western Cape Government’s recognition of the important role sport infrastructure plays in driving economic growth, tourism and community development.
“The Western Cape Government’s allocation of R15 million towards preparations for the Cricket World Cup 2027 is a strong vote of confidence in the role sport plays in growing our economy and inspiring our communities,” said Minister Mackenzie.
The tournament, which will be hosted in South Africa alongside regional partners, Namibia and Zimbabwe, is expected to draw tens of thousands of international visitors and millions of global viewers. Minister Mackenzie noted that the investment will support planning, infrastructure readiness and coordination efforts to ensure the Western Cape delivers a world-class event at Cape Town and Paarl stadiums.
“Major sporting events like the Cricket World Cup provide an incredible platform to showcase the Western Cape to the world. Beyond the excitement on the field, they stimulate tourism, create jobs and leave a lasting legacy for local sport development,” he added.
Cricket Boland CEO, James Fortuin, has lauded the allocation. “We are very pleased to learn of the allocation. We want to thank Minister Mackenzie and the Western Cape Government for this strategic investment in Boland Park, the only ICC accredited cricket stadium in a previously disadvantaged area.”
Western Province Cricket Association President, Johannes Adams, has also expressed his appreciation for the investment.
“We welcome and appreciate the Western Cape Government's R15 million investment in the 2027 Cricket World Cup infrastructure in the Western Cape. This funding validates the global significance of the cricketing venues and strengthens our commercial strategy for naming rights, hospitality suites, and sponsorship partnerships ahead of this landmark.”
The Western Cape has a proud history of hosting major sporting events, and preparations for 2027 will continue in partnership with national government, cricket authorities and host city stakeholders to ensure the province is ready to welcome the world.
Minister Mackenzie also highlighted the importance of ensuring that the benefits of hosting global events extend beyond stadiums.
“We want young people across the province to see the Cricket World Cup and believe that they too can be part of the future of the game. Events of this magnitude inspire the next generation of athletes and strengthen the sporting culture of our communities.”
