Minister Ricardo Mackenzie opens the 29th Cape Town Jazzathon

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, has opened the 29th Cape Town Jazzathon at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre, describing it as a powerful platform for youth development, job creation and the continued growth of the cultural and creative industries in the Western Cape.

“The Cape Town Jazzathon is a flagship cultural event that has, for nearly three decades, opened doors for young artists from across our province. It provides emerging musicians with exposure, performance experience and the confidence to pursue careers in the arts. Many of the artists we see on stages today began their journeys on platforms like this,” said Minister Mackenzie.

The Minister highlighted the economic impact of the Jazzathon, noting that events of this scale contribute meaningfully to job creation across the cultural value chain — from performers and sound technicians to event staff, vendors and the broader tourism and hospitality sectors.

“The arts are not only central to who we are as a society, but they also contribute to economic growth and livelihoods. Supporting initiatives such as the Jazzathon is part of our broader commitment to growing the creative economy and ensuring young people have access to opportunities,” he said.

Minister Mackenzie welcomed the strong attendance from communities across the Western Cape, as well as visitors from elsewhere in South Africa and around the world.

“It is encouraging to see so many people coming together to support the arts. Over the next three days, I encourage residents and visitors alike to come out, enjoy the 19 free performances and support these exceptionally talented young artists. They are the future stars of tomorrow.”

The Western Cape Government, through the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, remains committed to supporting programmes and events that nurture talent, promote social cohesion and celebrate the province’s rich cultural heritage.
