Minister Ricardo Mackenzie mourns the passing of Soli Philander

Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, has expressed his deep sadness at the passing of renowned actor, comedian and activist Soli Philander.

Philander was widely celebrated for his remarkable ability to capture the spirit of the Cape through humour, storytelling and performance. 

His work brought laughter to many while also shining a light on the richness, diversity and character of communities across the Western Cape.

Philander, also known for his activism for the rights of the LGBTIQA+ community and homeless people, was 65 years old.

Minister Mackenzie said Philander’s contribution to the arts and cultural landscape will leave a lasting legacy. “Soli Philander had a rare gift; he could make us laugh while holding up a mirror to our society. Through his wit, warmth and unmistakable storytelling style, he celebrated the people and places of the Cape in a way that resonated across generations. His voice and presence will be deeply missed.”

Philander’s career spanned decades and included theatre, television presenting, writing and comedy. 

Minister Mackenzie extended his heartfelt condolences to Philander’s family, friends and colleagues in the creative sector.

“On behalf of the Western Cape Government and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, I extend our sincere condolences to Soli’s loved ones and to the many artists and audiences whose lives he touched. We honour his contribution to the cultural life of our province and country.”
