“Great gift to humanity”: DCAS welcomes historic honour bestowed on David Kramer and the late Taliep Petersen

Western Cape MEC of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, has welcomed the City of Cape Town’s decision to award the Freedom of the City – the highest civic honour – to David Kramer and the late Taliep Petersen.

Minister Mackenzie described it as a historic recognition of two of South Africa’s most cherished cultural icons. The award was conferred during a Special Council sitting at City Hall on 20 January 2026.

“We honour two extraordinary artists whose contributions to music, theatre and the arts have enriched our country and resonated across the world,” said Minister Mackenzie. “David Kramer and Taliep Petersen did more than create music and theatre—they gave voice to our histories, our communities, and our shared humanity. In doing so, they made a lasting contribution not only to South Africa, but to the world.”

Minister Mackenzie noted the enduring legacy of their collaborations, including District Six: The Musical and Kat and the Kings, which captured the spirit, humour, and resilience of Cape Town’s communities. “Their work preserved cultural memory, inspired generations, and quietly supported livelihoods in the arts sector,” the Minister said.

“The Freedom of the City recognises not only talent and creativity, but the profound social and human impact of their work. Taliep Petersen’s legacy lives on through the next generation of artists, while David Kramer’s ongoing contributions continue to unite, inspire, and elevate South African culture on the global stage.”

Minister Mackenzie concluded: “Through their artistry, David and Taliep reminded us that culture is as vital to our city as leadership or innovation. To contribute to the arts in a way that uplifts communities, preserves history, and reaches the world is one of the greatest gifts to humanity. We celebrate their extraordinary lives and their enduring impact on Cape Town, the nation, and the world.” ‎
