#ForYOUTH: Meet Robyn
Meet Robyn Jooste, a talented drum-majorette under the Federation of Dance, Drill, Cheerleading, Majorette Sport of South Africa (FDDCMSA), whose inspiring journey embodies resilience and dedication. Robyn’s story began in Grade 8 in 2020 at Soneike High School, where she joined the school’s drummie team. The onset of COVID-19 forced her to learn from home, but with extra time on her hands, she turned to YouTube tutorials and sought guidance from her coach, Chantal Lombard. Inspired by Chantal’s commitment, Robyn found her passion and a mentor to emulate.
In 2021, as a nervous Grade 9 newcomer, Robyn pushed past intimidation to earn her Western Province colours, becoming the first athlete from her school to achieve this feat. Though her initial attempt at the SA team was unsuccessful, she persevered, setting personal goals that fuelled her determination. By 2022, her efforts paid off as she led her school team to a commendable 4th place at the National Championships in Bloemfontein and secured her SA colours, regaining her confidence.
Robyn’s achievements continued to soar in 2023 when she became a sub-leader and marched with the SA team at the international level in Zagreb, Croatia. In 2024, she represented South Africa again in Agen, France—a life-changing experience that fulfilled her youthful ambitions. Despite facing tough competition and criticism, Robyn’s parents’ encouragement to persevere for herself kept her going. Drummies, she says, shaped her strength, confidence, and resilience, offering a creative outlet from life’s challenges.
Her journey reached new heights in her matric year when she was named Sportswoman of the Year. Today, Robyn lives her dream as a coach for the Durbanville Majorettes, guiding young girls from diverse backgrounds. She finds immense joy in watching them grow, form lifelong friendships, and develop discipline and values through the sport. “No obstacle is easy, but get back up with passion and strength,” Robyn advises, encouraging others to embrace their unique potential.
Since 1 April 2025, she is now working as an intern in our department as part of the First Work Experience Premier's Advancement of Youth (PAY) Programme.
Robyn’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and passion—values we celebrate this Youth Month.
